Geography question analysis of UPSC prelims 2024

 1.      Consider the following Statements:

Statement- I

The atmosphere is heated more by incoming solar radiation than by terrestrial radiation.

 Statement- II

Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are good absorbers of long wave radiation.

Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above statements?

(a)    Both statement-I and Statement- II are correct and Statement- II explains statement- I

(b)   Both statement- I and statement-II are correct, but statement-II does not explain statement-I

(c)    Statement- I is correct, but statement- II is incorrect

(d)   Statement- I is incorrect, but statement-II is correct

Explanation

Ans: (d)

The incoming solar radiation becomes short waves forms. After receiving incoming solar radiation, the earth becomes a radiating body and releases energy in the form of long waves of radiation to the atmosphere (called terrestrial radiation). Caron dioxide and other greenhouse gases absorb these long waves of radiation. For this reason, the atmosphere is more heated by terrestrial radiation than incoming solar radiation. (NCERT Geography book class XI “Fundamentals of Physical Geography”, page no – 81, section – Terrestrial Radiation).

So, statement – I is incorrect, and statement – II is correct.

2.     Consider the following Statements:

Statement- I

Thickness of the troposphere at the equator is much greater as compared to Poles.

 Statement- II

At the equator, heat is transported to great heights by strong Convectional currents.

Explanation

Ans: (a)

The average height of the troposphere is 13 Km and extends roughly to a height of 8 Km near the poles and about 18 Km at the equator. (NCERT Geography book class XI “Fundamentals of Physical Geography”, page no. 77, section – structure of the atmosphere).

For direct sunlight received at the equator, the surface level is more heated, and strong convection currents transport heat to greater heights. For this reason, the troposphere layer is thicker at the equator.

So, statement – I and II are correct

3.      Consider the following :

1.      Pyroclastic debate

2.      Ash and dust

(b)   Only two

(c)    Only three

(d)   All four

          Explanation

           Ans: (d)

Select the answer using the code given:

(a)   1 only

(b)   2 only

(c)    Both 1 and 2

(d)   Neither 1 nor 2

   Explanation

Ans: (a)

The presence of warm ocean currents, Gulf Stream and North Atlantic Drift makes the North Atlantic Ocean warmer and the isotherms bend toward the north. (NCERT Geography book class XI “Fundamentals of Physical Geography”, page no – 83, section – Distribution of Temperature)

5.      Which of the following countries are well known as the two largest cocoa producers in the world?

(d)   Madagascar and Mozambique

   Explanation

Ans: (c)

Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana are both West African countries. Côte d’Ivoire is the largest producer of cocoa, and Ghana is the second largest producer of cocoa. Both countries are producing more than half of the total cocoa production in the world.

Rainwater contains atmospheric oxygen.

Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above statements?

(a)   Both statement - II and statement - III are correct and both of them explain statement – I

(b)   Both statement - II and statement - III are correct, but only one of them explains statement – I

(c)    Only one of the statements - II and – III is correct and that explains statement – I

(d)   Neither statement – II nor statement - III is correct

          Explanation

     Ans:  (a)

When rainfall occurs, carbon dioxide dissolves into rainwater and makes a weak acid. This is a reason for the weathering of rocks.

Oxygen also dissolved into the rainwater. It creates an oxidation process.

(NCERT Geography book class XI “Fundamentals of Physical Geography”, page no – 48, section – Chemical Weathering Processes).

Statement I, II, and III are correct.

 11.   With reference to” Water Vapour”, which of the following statements is/are correct?

1.      It is a gas, The amount of which decreases with altitude.

2.      Its percentage is maximum at the poles.

Select the answer using the port given below:

(a)   1 only

(b)   2 only

(c)    Both 1 and 2

(d)   Neither 1 nor 2

      Explanation

Ans: (a)

Water vapour is created from surface level mostly water bodies by temperature. So, it has maximum concentration in the lower level and decreases with altitude.

More temperature increases water retention capacity in the form of water vapor. So, equatorial regions have the maximum percentage of water vapor.

12.   Consider the following description:

1.      Annual and daily range of temperature is low.

2.      Precipitation occurs throughout the year.

Marine west coast climate, this climate extends north–west Europe, the Coastlands of British Columbia, Chile, New Zealand, and Tasmania. The annual and daily range of temperature is low in this climate. Precipitation occurs throughout the year, around 50 cm – 250 cm. (G C Leong Book, Chapter – The Cool Temperate Western Margin Climate, Page no – 163).

Select the answer using the code given below:

(a)    1 only

(b)   2 only

(c)    Both 1 and 2

(d)   Neither 1 nor 2

Explanation

Ans: (c)

Deflection is more with the increase of wind velocity for the Coriolis force. Yes, it is more at the polar regions and absent at the equator. (NCERT Geography book class XI “Fundamentals of Physical Geography”, page no – 90, section – Coriolis Force)

14.   On June 21 Every year, which of the following latitude(s) experience(s) a sunlight of more than 12 hours?

Select the correct answer using the court given below:

(a)    1 only

(b)   2 only

(c)    3 and 4

(d)   2 and 4

Explanation

Ans: (d)

On June 21, this is the time of Uttarayan. When the sun is directly above on Topic of Cancer. So, this time increases the duration of the time with the increase of latitude in the Northern Hemisphere. For example, on June 21, the duration of daytime is 12 hours at the equator, and in the North Pole, the duration is 6 months.

(b)   Both statements – I and statement - II are correct, but statement - II does not explain statement - I

(c)    Statement - I is correct, but statement - II is incorrect

(d)   Statement – I is incorrect, but statement - II is correct

             Explanation

             Ans: (d)

The lifespans of giant stars are shorter than dwarf stars. Because giant stars have higher core temperatures and more mass. So, by their fuel, these giant stars burn faster.

Yes, compared to dwarf stars, giant stars have a greater rate of nuclear reactions. Due to more mass and higher core temperatures.
